Safety

The safety of our participants is considered first and foremost.  Safety is built into every aspect of our trips.
All instructors are experienced in a wide range of outdoor activities and situations.  Additionally, they are familiar with most terrain and territories in which we operate.
‘My Own Backyard’ is a comparatively small operation, and is unique in the fact that the program director is responsible for creating every aspect of each trip. This level of familiarity allows for the utmost safety at each moment on every adventure.
While safety and risk management are practiced on every trip, participant safety cannot be guaranteed.  The activities on each trip have inherent risks.  Inherent risks are those which cannot be eliminated without destroying the unique character of the activities.  The same elements that contribute to the unique character of these activities can cause loss or damage to the equipment, accidental injury, illness, or in extreme cases, permanent trauma, disability, or death.
It important that all participants and their parents understand that there are real dangers associated with traveling in remote wild areas.  Additionally, it is important that participants and parents understand that the management of our activities with respect to these dangers is a fundamental part of what we do.
Good physical conditioning, positive mental attitude, and paying close attention to your surroundings are important essentials in helping manage risk and maximize safety.
It is our hope, that as part of the experience with ‘My Own Backyard’, participants learn how to identify hazards, adapt behavior, and better manage risks that will be valuable tools in a lifetime of enjoying the outdoors.
We expect that all participants read through initial and sign our more thorough agreement and waiver.
